Overlooking the beautiful and calm Gramercy Park in one of the most quiet areas of Midtown Manhattan sits a sun-drenched 1,000 ft² apartment. The recent arrival of a new-born has spawned a search for the location of a new bedroom as well as office in the previously generous living room area. For everyone familiar with New York City apartments, this shall be enough to describe the challenge. Our solution to the task was the insertion of a curved double-wall taking advantage of an unusable corner area in the living room across from the entrance to reclaim space for a precisely tailored office. At the same time, the double-wall creates additional space for a walk-in closet and the delineation of a new bedroom. Oddly, the use of space created by the intervention makes the apartment feel more spacious than before!
